Millions of Girls in Africa miss up to 2 months of school a year because of menstruation. They often times do not have adequate sanitary supplies so they end up having to sit at home while they menstruate. Girls that do not have access to proper sanitary care end up using anything they can find such as leaves, old newspaper, mattress stuffing, or even sand. This is not only very uncomfortable, it is also unsanitary. Because it is unsanitary, it opens them up to a host of other problems such as infection and disease. Many girls feel very ashamed about their periods, which are a normal part of life. When girls miss so much school they fall behind in their studies and end up dropping out of school. This continues the cycle of poverty.

We at Mighty Girls want to change that. We want to provide girls with their very own Mighty Girls Kit. Each kit will have 5 reusable cloth pads, 2 pairs of underwear, a washcloth and a bar of soap in a reusable, closable cloth bag. By providing girls with reusable pads, they will have 3-5 years of effective menstrual care. They will be able to continue their daily tasks, and stay in school. It will also help the girls to be more confident in who they are. All of these things combined will help these young girls break through barriers and break the cycle of poverty!

How can you help? You can help by making cloth pads, closable cloth bags, new washcloths, girls underwear (unused) in sizes 9-14, and travel soaps and sending them to Mighty Girls to be distributed in townships in South Africa. If you can’t sew or don’t have the time, check out the many awesome cloth pad sellers on Etsy and pick a few out to donate to Mighty Girls.
